Paul Drummond

These books have all been recommended by Paul Drummond.

He says : I read widely, so choosing just five recent books was tough. I tend to favour stories that make me think a bit, but I've been known to read trash too. That said, bad space opera makes me cringe.

Paperback

J. G. Ballard

The Drowned World

Profoundly nihilistic, but genuinely dreamlike in its images of flooded London. Ballard's view of humanity seems to be 'wipe 'em all out and start again from ameoba', so not one to read if you're a bit down.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Great Gatsby

I was forced to read this at school and hated it, but when I tried it again a few years later I realised it was a classic. Evocative, personal, and small enough to fit in your jacket pocket.

Martin Cruz Smith

Gorky Park cover

A thriller that doesn't keep banging on about spies, guns and secret codes, but concentrates on the characters, especially the agreeably melancholy Arkady Renko. The sequels were good too, and the film had William Hurt in it.

Dan Simmons

Endymion cover

Normally I hate fantasy, but this series of books moves quickly beyond the usual genre confines to become a story about sex, death, religion, and fate. Stick out the first book, Hyperion, and you'll enjoy it.

Philip. K. Dick

A Scanner Darkly

How could I not recommend a Philip K.Dick book? A very bleak tale of drug altered consciousness and covert surveillance. A great book to start with if you're new to Dick.
